Upgrading Apache and PHP - apache sever will not start

Postby Ztruker » Thu Dec 23, 2010 3:19 pm

I am upgrading my old web server.

From:
Apache/1.3.27 (Win32)
PHP Version 4.3.9
MySQL 3.23.49

To:
Apache/2.2.17 (Win32)
PHP Version 5.3.3
MySQL 5.0.7-dev

I installed Apache2.2 in D:\Apache2.2, leaving the original 1.3.27 in D:\Apache. Made minor changes to httpd.conf and was able to start Apache2.2 and load the default index.html.

Next I installed PHP 5.3.3 in D:\PHP leaving the original 4.3.9 in C:\PHP.

Now I can't start Apache2.2. Every time I try I get an error:

If I edit httpd.conf and remove the entries at the end added by PHP then Apache2.2 starts and works okay. The entries are:

#BEGIN PHP INSTALLER EDITS - REMOVE ONLY ON UNINSTALL
PHPIniDir "D:/PHP/"
LoadModule php5_module "D:/PHP/php5apache2_2.dll"
#END PHP INSTALLER EDITS - REMOVE ONLY ON UNINSTALL

The directory references are correct and point to where PHP 5.3.3 is installed.

Could this be caused by have two versions of PHP installed at the same time? I don't see how since nothing in Apache2.2 httpd.conf points to the C:\PHP where 4.3.9 is installed.

Would I be better off asking this in an Apache forum?

Hi Ztruker

I got the same problem. I am new to the server area. (oh is this the correct way to post under your post?)

My system Window XP Pro
Installed Apache 2.2.17 (win32)runs ok.
Installed PHP 5.2.17(win32) VC6.

upon running got the following in error log:-

[Sat Apr 23 16:42:32 2011] [warn] pid file G:/apache2.2/logs/httpd.pid overwritten -- Unclean shutdown of previous Apache run?

Windows error as per what you pasted on your post.

If I amend the httpd file on PHP section towards the end:-

#BEGIN PHP INSTALLER EDITS - REMOVE ONLY ON UNINSTALL
#PHPIniDir "G:/apache2.2/php/"
#LoadModule php5_module "G:/apache2.2/php/php5apache2_2.dll"
AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps
#END PHP INSTALLER EDITS - REMOVE ONLY ON UNINSTALL

It runs.

When I access it via Mozila, it does not display the index.php not the index.html file thus no php index screen. It only gives me - It Works! - when the only files I have in the htdocs foldes in my favicon.ico file (which runs ok ... lol), the index.php file and index.html file.

Do you think it has anything to do with the php5ts.dll script interpreter? Have you manage to solve the issue? I'm stuck at this point.

Not trying to be a smartass, I am actually pretty good at that.. but your first issue is Windows.

I would say that you should uninstall PHP, clean out all entries in http.conf and remove them from any configuration include directories and try it again.

The other thing you should probably look into would be the %PATH%.

If you really would like to get into developing on an environment that provides more than 70% of the Internet, install VMWare, and then any distro of Linux you want to play with and code it up that way. Just my $0.02 worth.

Otherwise, you're going to have to make special adjustments here and there for your PHP scripts to work with the silly way Microsoft deals with drives and filesystems.
