I've just put up IIS so's family can connect with my machine and peruse family photos.

But all they get right now is a directory listing.

It'd be nice if they could get something a bit better: thumbnails expandable, that sort of thing. Don't need a fully featured fancy thing but just something a bit better than a directory listing.

There'd be a thousand pics in a directory.

I thought piwigo might be the thing but now ( i'm in the process of getting it up and running ) it begins to look like it wants all its material in its own root directory.

Can't go copying all these files (they're even on different disks) into the C:/inetpub tree. That's not it at all.

Some script that I can put in each dir that'll run when we move to that dir with the browser...

Anyone got any ideas what might help?

In each directory, create an index.php page - this will automatically load when you don't put another name into your browser address; e.g. myweb.com is the same as myweb.com/index.php, if you are browsing in your localhost you will have directories below this e.g. localhost/holiday-2015

Glob is probably the easiest for getting the filenames in a directory.

It's up to you how you want to display them as a html page.
