Ok, I just installed mysql. Is anyone able to access the database with the username root?

You betcha.
use config setting and username = root DO NOT USE A PASSWORD.

First... NEVER use root login in your script.. In most cases the login is root and no password.. i think it has no access from any host, just a local one..
