You are not authorized to view this page

I have struggled for 2 days to get Apache, PHP and MySQL set up on Windows XP. The problem is that I get the message "You are not authorized to view this page" when I try to access a PHP page. I have experimented with permissions (even giving full control to everyone), and I have made various mods to the php.ini and httpd.conf files, as advised in tutorials, but it makes no difference.

XP SP2
Apache 2.0.52 - working ok
MySQL 4.0.21 - working ok
PHP 5.0.2 (installer)

This type of problem appears quite regularly on forums, but I haven't seen the answer. Am I missing something simple?

What is the exact text of the message in its entirety? Is it a PHP message or an Apache message, or maybe something else entirely? Are you sure Apache is running on the port you want it running on? What address are you typing into your address bar? What is the content of your PHP script? Have you tried running it from the command line?

one of the problems is you used the installer. Which will install as a CGI. If you are using apache you want to use the module which is a manual install.

I am trying to run the <?php phpinfo() ?> function. The file (test.php) is in the htdocs folder. If I type 'http://localhost/' I get the Apache confirmation screen. If I type 'php-cgi -i' at the command prompt, I get the expected PHP info. If I type 'http://localhost/test.php', I get the above message?

Any ideas? I appreciate your help.

I recommend you to first install php with the zip package that you receive ie. as a module of apache.

Got it! Although I've almost forgotten why I was trying to install it in the first place!

You were right, Redcircle and ruturajv. I uninstalled PHP, unzipped the PHP files to the C drive, put a fresh copy of php.ini in the Windows folder, got a fresh copy of httpd.conf, followed the manual installation instructions at php.net, restarted Apache, and there is was!
