PHP development without needing a server???

you could download a web server onto your desktop PC, e.g. http://www.xitami.com and then install PHP onto it http://www.php.net
and even MySQL http://www.mysql.com
you could also install phpMyAdmin so you can view your database :)

You really don't NEED php on the machine to develop.. you only need php when you want to test the script.

You don't really need a server-type OS to run a Web server for development purposes.

You might try out FoxServ (http://www.foxserv.net), which automates the installation and basic configuration of Apache, PHP, MySQL, and phpMyAdmin for Windows.
