Problem with <?php tag

Problem with <?php tag

My problem is that my php installation work only with scripts that starts with:

<?php

and scripts that starts with:

<?

is not interpreted as php. What do I need to setup ?
(currently running PHP 4.3.0 & Apache 1.3.24)

if you have other (.phtml, .php3, etc)
change it in httpd.conf

in php.ini change this:
