Pear installation

go-pear.php wants to install pear to my home directory, which I hardly believe is where it should go... however I'm having a heck of a time figuring out where it does belong. I tried my php directory, but it came out php/PEAR/PEAR.... I'm getting fairly confused.

If somebody could let me know where to install PEAR in relation to the php install directory that would be great.
