How would I use caretPos to insert a certain text at a certain position in a textfield?

I want to know why, just not how. Also i did search google, except i searched for "javascript caretPos"
also the search you gave me, most of them do not pertain to inserting to where the mouse is, and the ones that do does not explain why. I want to know not only how, but why for scripts.
