jQuery or good ol' JavaScript?

When it's time to code something that requires JavaScript, do you write your own codes based on jQuery (the popular JavaScript library), or prefer to use JavaScript instead?

While jQuery may be a lot simpler to write and it may be easier to learn, since it's based on JavaScript, it can slow things down if it's excessively used. So both jQuery and JavaScript have advantages and disadvantages, it's speed vs. simplicity to write.

Which one do you code in and why?
