I have text which is pre formatted so I want to display it as it is. If i use <pre> tag, I get the result, but for very long lines, the table gets extended which i don't want. I use no the wrapping attributes for pre, but work only for netscape and the line gets trimmed but it doesn't work for IE..

By definition, preformatted text will only have line breaks where they are present in the text. That is, it won't wrap (and shouldn't). If you just want the text monospaced and not preformatted, use the <tt></tt> HTML tag.
