I have always wondered, why do some urls have a dot in the middle of them. For example:
http://www.blog.examplewebsite.com(this is just an example)
What does the dot between blog and website represent?

it is..
hostname.domain.topleveldomain.
so
.com is a top level domain.
domain.com is the name of the domain, under .com
hostname.domain.com is the name of the computer, in the domain under the .com top level domain.
