fputs adding unwanted backslashes

I have a problem using fputs();

I am writing form data to a text file. (overwriting existing content).

Unfortunatly backslashes are being added to the file before some not all of the double-quotes and single quotes in the text.

Does anyone have any idea why this or or how I can correct it?
