You too, huh? My head was bursting with information on what the project entails, what the programmers requirements are, and what rewards we can expect.

ability to write object oriented code

can make quality graphics

Well, I can work for free (changed my mind), I know PHP and OOP, and I know about graphic design too. But, oh darn, I'm not good in a team. Guess I can't join. :cry:

Hi there,

what my girl is trying to say is, that we're looking for people to help us with a new forum. And yeah just for the fun of it, to see if we can pull this off. I know people don't like to work for free, but there's nothing i can offer expect the expierence of creating something that people might actually use. And hey there's a lot of stuff to learn and gain from this project. Working as a team is nice, but I don't know myself how it's supposed to work. I guess everybody can work on a certain part of the forum and then we combine it.

PHP and OOP are a must though. If you're not that good at it but at least know it that's fine.

So who dares to join our team and work their ass off?

Well, perhaps you're not aware, so I'll fill you in on a little secret.
1. Forums and BB software are 10 a penny. The market is flooded with them and they're all more or less identical
2. People will join if they have something to gain, if they have nothing to gain, they won't join. Regarding things to gain, see point 1.
3. PHP Programmers (at least the ones worth their salt) won't program for free. It seems that this software is being purpose built for yourselves, which suggests you're looking for free programmers. I won't say they don't exist, but good luck on finding them.
4. Working as a team is nicer, when the team are physically present to verbally communicate ideas, and they're all working at the same time. I know from experience working with a team over the net is very difficult. It's not impossible, but very difficult.
5. There are more, but I think 5 is enough, so I'll make this the crucial one. A PHP based forum already exists, it is created through OOP, it is free, it is used by millions, it is extendable and open source, and it's the one which is running these forums - phpBB! I personally can't think of a single reason why anyone would want to sit down and make another one, when a perfectly good one already exists. But if you care to look, be my guest.

OO a must?? since when does good software need to be OO?? I know tons of software that is not OO and it is better then some OO software. So, OO is an option, not a must!

I just don't know why I should join a team that wants to figure out if they can build a forum or not. I know I can, so why should I join??

Something else strikes me.
What I've seen here is 2 people posting that they want to do it.
one supllies a HOTMAIL-adress!! and you've no website at all about what your planning. You must have some experience in php-programming that you can use to build a site or something to persuade people.
When your trying to pull off something as big as this, you might want to try an approach that may look a bit more "professional". May get people over the line easyer.

Well actually it's a must for the project. Yes i agree, good software doesn't need OO and i didn't say that. Just that i prefer it for the project.

We got a website, but it's empty. Nope there is no fully worked out plan yet, but ideas.

I've done a lot of perl programming and used it to write some forums (simple forums). I also know php and it's not much of a difference. Yes I wrote some php stuff also.

When your trying to pull off something as big as this, you might want to try an approach that may look a bit more "professional". May get people over the line easyer.

I'm no professional. I'm doing it for the fun of it and to learn in the process. I'm looking for people to join the team because something as big as this is too much work for a single person. I'm not saying I expect highly capable programmers to join the team and work for free. But I'm looking for people who wanna make a forum, learn, have fun and when it's released be proud to have done something like this.

No really, no. But it reeks of unprofessionalism! If someone wants to help you develop something for free, it's because they know they can put their name to it and take a step up the ladder. I don't think 'Making a small forum for clueless people for free' would look good on anyone's CV.

So why do you want to embark on such a long project? Have you not thought this out fully? Or were you just going to mull your way through and see where you end up? Why don't you supply the name of your site, and use that to send emails. At least then we will know for whom the project is for! I'd rather put a professional domain on my CV, rather than something like http://www.myisp.com/~users/theuser/whatever

We know you're asking, but you still haven't gotten our point. You're asking a lot, providing nothing in return, and your plan is undecided and you want to create something that already exists! It doesn't make sense!

well, believe it or not but not everybody wants something in return. some people really just like doing stuff for free (see the open source community). but if you think this doesn't make sense at all feel free to delete the thread.

I never said I don't think it'll happen (I've been quite careful with regards to that), I just don't think it'll happen here. I've also wished you the best in finding someone. I won't delete this thread, because there may be people interested. I doubt it, but we'll see.
