I need some help altering a CGI program

Alterations: want to use the phpBB mySQL database instead of internal database, with certain phpBB groups able to post,. edit all posts, and do admin features.

I haven't got a clue how to do this. Can anyone give me a hand or some advice?

What I want to do: Instead of Coranto using its built-in user functions, I want it to authenticate users against the phpBB MySQL database, and allow only members of certain groups to post news, others to edit all the news, and admins in phpBB to have admin functions in Coranto.
