parameters after a URL - know about the "?" but...

I understand how to pass variables with a URL using the "?" and suceeding "&". However, is it possible to get the value of just one parameter after the "?". For example:

http://www.mysite.com?6

Is there a way to pick up the 6 or absence of the 6?

$_SERVER['QUERY_STRING'] will give you everything after the '?'
