Tools for generating graphs

Hi all

I am looking for suggestions on the following ,

We currently run a website that generates some Java Applets with data from a MySQL database to display graphs like bar-graphs etc, what PHP method is there to do this function...and is free ...

I would imagine that it would be faster than Java applets ... according to my logic..?
