fresh downloaded copy of phpmyadmin gives no error

check whether your mysql deamon is running

/etc/init.d/mysqld restart

i just wanted to say that it is good to be able to find the answer to my question on a site like this. i had a 1046 error on selecting the database and realized the problem after seeing the answer here. awesome. :-D
