What is the difference between the extension *.php and *.php4, does the extension matter?
What abt Zend optimizer ?? does the php file extension has something to do with ?

the extension doesn't matter..it's just to show that the phpfile was tested (and made) for a server with php4.x installed

No matter but if at the server side provider set php extension only at .php, you need use .php too.
At the unix system you may installing for example 2 version of PHP 4.3.0 and 3.11
